Lakewood Asbestos Removal removes vinyl floor tile, black mastic and sheet vinyl in Lakewood, Washington, once a sample comes back positive or the floor is presumed to contain asbestos. A single room can hold a tile floor, an adhesive layer, a second floor laid over it and new carpet on top, so the work starts with finding out how many layers there are.

The state of the material matters more than its name. PSCAA defines nonfriable material by what it does when dry and handled, and nonfriable removal needs no agency notice as long as it is not sanded, ground or sawed. We take up floors in Lakewood and the neighboring communities of Steilacoom and Parkland.

Flooring options

Vinyl floor tile

Intact vinyl asbestos tile is nonfriable under PSCAA’s definition, so it can come up without a notice if it is lifted, not broken up or ground. Tiles are kept whole where possible, dust is controlled, and each piece goes promptly into a container marked as nonfriable asbestos waste.

Black mastic

The adhesive under old tile can be sampled separately from the tile. Scraping dry mastic, or grinding the subfloor to remove it, abrades the material, and PSCAA then treats it as friable and applies the full work practices. Sampling the adhesive separately keeps that from being a surprise.

Sheet vinyl and felt backing

Sheet vinyl is a surface layer over a felt or paper backing, and the backing is where the question lies. Whether it is friable depends on its condition: if it crumbles to powder by hand pressure when dry, PSCAA treats it as friable, with notice above the 48-square-foot yearly threshold. A sample tells you which case you have.

Layered floors

Carpet pulled back in a living room can reveal tile, and a laundry room can hold several floors in a row. Every layer that the new flooring plan will lift gets its own sample. A layer left untouched can be covered with new underlayment, which keeps it undisturbed.

Planning a floor job

Floor work is small in area and big in questions.

Subfloor condition

Removing tile and adhesive exposes the subfloor. Gouges, moisture damage and leveling needs are easier to price once the floor is up, so the scope keeps room for them.

Grinding and sanding

Anything that grinds, sands or saws asbestos-containing flooring is prohibited under PSCAA’s nonfriable rule unless the dust is handled as friable material. That rules out sanding down a mastic residue as a shortcut.

Disposal

Nonfriable waste goes into labeled containers and to a facility authorized to take it. In Pierce County outside the City of Tacoma, PSCAA’s list names Hidden Valley Transfer Station in Puyallup, and a waste shipment record goes with the load.

A floor is one part of a larger plan: ceilings are covered on popcorn ceiling removal and the test that starts every job on asbestos testing and surveys. The rest of Lakewood Asbestos Removal is on the home page.
