Asbestos Removal in Parkland

Lakewood Asbestos Removal serves Parkland, the unincorporated Pierce County community, with asbestos testing, removal and pre-demolition abatement. Parkland has the largest share of pre-1950 homes of the three places this site serves, so the survey comes before any remodel plan is final.

The 2024 ACS counts 15,159 housing units in Parkland: 51.6% from 1979 or earlier, 12.2% from before 1950, and 29.7% in buildings of five or more units. About 48% of occupied homes are rented, so rental rules apply to a large part of the area.

Asbestos removal services

Asbestos testing and surveys

A Parkland remodel or an apartment turnover starts with an AHERA inspector sampling what the work touches. Owners of owner-occupied single-family houses may take the remodel samples themselves. More under asbestos testing and surveys.

Popcorn ceiling removal

Parkland has 2,536 homes from the 1970s and 2,058 from the 1960s, decades when sprayed ceilings were in use. Wet removal under containment, with PSCAA notice above 48 square feet, is explained on the popcorn ceiling removal page.

Floor tile and sheet vinyl

Vinyl tile and its black adhesive come up in laundry rooms, kitchens and apartment entries. Tile lifted unbroken is nonfriable; see floor tile and sheet vinyl removal.

Siding and roofing

Some Parkland houses from the 1940s and 1950s may carry cement shingle siding. How shingles are removed whole and how roofing is classed is covered under siding and roofing removal.

Rental and apartment abatement

Nearly half of Parkland homes are rented, and 29.7% of units are in buildings of five or more. The owner-occupant exceptions end there. See rental and apartment asbestos abatement.

Parkland’s housing and asbestos

Parkland is a census-designated place, not a city, so county rather than city permitting would apply.

Older and mixed housing

About 1,844 homes date from before 1950, the highest share among the places this site serves, and another 3,442 from 1950 to 1969. Beside the houses are 1,984 units in buildings of 10 to 19 apartments. Age is a reason to sample, not a result.

Permits for a Parkland address

Parkland is unincorporated, so there is no city permit office. Ask Pierce County which permits a demolition or major remodel needs, and contact PSCAA before planning.

Disposal for a Parkland address

Parkland is outside the City of Tacoma. PSCAA lists Tacoma Landfill as accepting asbestos waste from the City of Tacoma only, and Hidden Valley Transfer Station in Puyallup for Pierce County waste, with a shipment record.

Survey, notice and removal steps

Whatever the material, a Parkland project moves through the same decisions. Survey what the work will disturb, or the whole structure before demolition. Decide whether intact material can be left alone, sealed or must be removed. Notify PSCAA when friable removal passes 10 linear feet or 48 square feet in a year, and for any demolition over 120 square feet of roof area; contractors also give L&I notice for projects over 48 square feet or 10 linear feet.

Removal is wet, contained work by certified workers, or by the owner of a single-family home who lives in it. Waste then goes in sealed, labeled containers to an authorized facility with a shipment record.

Frequently asked questions

Does Parkland follow the same asbestos rules as Lakewood?

The agency rules do. Parkland is in Pierce County, within PSCAA’s jurisdiction, and state L&I rules apply. For permits on an unincorporated address, ask Pierce County.

Can a tenant or landlord remove asbestos themselves in Parkland?

No. PSCAA’s single-family residence definition excludes rental property and multiple-family units, so a certified contractor and an AHERA survey are needed there.

Where does Parkland asbestos waste go?

Friable waste has to be at an authorized facility within 10 days. Parkland is outside the City of Tacoma, so Tacoma Landfill is excluded, and PSCAA’s county option is Hidden Valley Transfer Station in Puyallup. A shipment record accompanies the load.

How do I check that an abatement contractor is certified?

Search the company on the L&I contractor lookup before signing, and ask who the certified supervisor on your job will be. Washington requires abatement to be carried out by certified workers under that supervisor.

Steilacoom has a separate page: asbestos removal in Steilacoom covers the town’s 1970s houses and its Historic District.
